There’s a fast-growing trend in the holiday and travel world and surprisingly, it’s actually quite…well, old.
‘Grancation’ is the word on everyone’s lips and paints a multi-generational picture of going on holiday with your children as well as your parents. As a parent the benefits are clear: you get a helping hand with childcare, while grandparents get to spend some quality time with the little ones as they grow up.
I know what you might be thinking. Who wants to go away with their parents? Or perhaps more frightening, your in-laws? Well, the numbers may surprise you. A recent survey questioned 2,139 families who were planning a holiday this year and 53 per cent said they would be going away with at least one set of grandparents.
Help with childcare
For 67 per cent of those surveyed, a primary reason for many is that an essential part of any family break is at least a couple of hours free from being mum or dad. And with the pressure of work commitments and day-to-day responsibilities, it is nice to know there is trustworthy help available should the need arise. It’s estimated that grandparents dedicated 1.7bn hours to childcare in the past year alone.
It’s nice to see statistics to back this trend up, as it is something we at Center Parcs have been noticing over the past few years. If you walk around any Center Parcs Village you will notice multi-generational families staying with us and, most importantly, getting involved with Village life. You may be surprised at just how many activities are available for grandparents and children to share. An extremely popular choice is Pottery Painting – a creative and relaxing way to spend time together.
We pride ourselves on family breaks that cater for any guest, regardless of age. We have dedicated World of Spa treatments available for couples who would like some time away to relax. The Indulgence Dual Treatment is ideal for those looking to share a pampering spa experience. This 55-minute treatment combines deep cleansing and a relaxing massage to your face, neck and scalp to leave you feeling rejuvenated.

It is a fact that older generations are living longer, healthier and more active lives. A recent Age UK report stated that 10 per cent of over 65s regularly walk as a means of exercise, while 6 per cent swim regularly. You won’t be surprised to hear that we have something to cater for both of those activities.
You could soak up the scenery and go for a family stroll through the 400 acres of woodland that surround each Center Parcs Village. And there is always the Subtropical Swimming Paradise, kept at a comfortable 29.5oC all-year-round. You’re never too old for the rapids!
