Quick and simple Halloween treats you can make together

Get your family into the kitchen and have some fun making these simple but effective Halloween treats

After hours of trick or treating together with the onslaught of children’s Halloween parties, the mass of sugar, chocolate and all-things sweet can transform our little darlings into little monsters quicker than you can say “Boo!”

Check out these recipes for some ideas on how you can add a healthier twist to your Halloween treats this year. But don’t worry, they still taste terrifyingly tasty!

Pumpkin-and-bananas

Scary Satsumas and Ghoulish Bananas

You’ll need:
• Bag of Satsumas
• Couple of celery sticks
• Four bananas
• Dark or milk chocolate icing pen

Instructions:
1. Peel your Satsumas but make sure to leave on the pith.
2. Get a stick of celery and cut it in half. Cut it in half lengthways before chopping pieces of celery to create a ‘stalk’, around 3cm long.
3. Pop your celery stick into the hole at the top of the Satsuma.
4. For your Ghoulish Bananas, simply peel each one before chopping in half. Depending on the size of your banana you might want to chop a bit more off; each banana piece should be around 4 inches in height.
5. Use your chocolate icing pen to draw on a range of ghoulish faces. Make them scary, happy or angry – the choice is yours!

Spooky-strawberries

Spooky Strawberries

You’ll need:
• Punnet of strawberries
• 200g white chocolate
• Dark or milk chocolate icing pen

Instructions:
1. Boil a pan of water and place on a steady heat, but not boiling.
2. Place a heatproof bowl over the top of the heated water. Make sure the water doesn’t touch the bottom of the bowl.
3. Break up the white chocolate into small pieces and place into the bowl. Heat and stir gently until it melts. Then take the pan and bowl off the heat.
4. Coat each strawberry into the warm melted chocolate; you might need more than one coat to completely cover them.
5. Place your strawberries onto a plate and leave to cool for around 10 minutes in the fridge.
6. Once the chocolate is cool and almost set, draw your spooky faces on to each strawberry with a chocolate icing pen.

Chocolate-spiders

Chilling chocolate spiders (admittedly, this one’s less healthy!)

You’ll need:
• Packet of Oreo biscuits
• 200g milk chocolate
• White and black icing pens
• Packet of coca cola fizzy laces

Instructions:
1. Boil a pan of water and place on a steady heat, but not boiling.
2. Place a heatproof bowl over the top of the heated water. Make sure the water doesn’t touch the bottom of the bowl.
3. Break up the milk chocolate into small pieces and place into the bowl. Heat and stir gently until it melts. Then take the pan and bowl off the heat.
4. Take one biscuit and spoon a thin layer of melted chocolate on top.
5. Take a fizzy lace and cut in half with a sharp knife. If your laces were a bit thicker, like mine were, you might want to cut in half lengthways to get thinner ‘spider legs’. Do this with another fizzy lace until you have eight pieces.
6. Stick your legs onto the melted chocolate layer, four on each side, before getting another biscuit and sandwiching on top.
7. Spoon another layer of melted chocolate on top of the second biscuit, then leave to cool in the fridge for about 10 minutes.
8. Once the chocolate is cool, you can create spooky or funny faces with your black and white icing pens. I gave my spiders googly eyes and fangs, what will yours look like?
